Al maintains a general litigation practice. His commercial litigation practice includes contractual disputes, economic torts, and shareholder disputes. He also acts for employers and employees with respect to wrongful dismissal claims and other employment matters. Al has experience at the Superior Court, Divisional Court and Court of Appeal, and has also appeared before arbitration panels and administrative and regulatory tribunals.

Prior to joining Chitiz Pathak LLP, Al practiced in the litigation department at McCarthy Tétrault LLP, where he focused on commercial litigation, professional liability and international trade matters.

Al received a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree and Master of Industrial Relations degree from Queen’s University, where he was an Academic All-Canadian with the Golden Gaels football team. Al obtained his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2005, graduating in the International Law stream. He was called to the Bar in 2006.

Al’s notable cases include the following:

  • Counsel to a former director and shareholder on a successful appeal of a decision to stay his Ontario action on the basis of a forum selection clause in a shareholders agreement, Loat v. Howarth, 2011 ONCA 509 (CanLII),

  • Counsel to a former partner in a business on a successful summary judgment motion against a credit card company that had sued him for expenses incurred on his ex-partner’s business credit card, Amex Bank of Canada v. Len Green, 2012 ONSC 623

  • Counsel to a physician on a successful summary judgment motion, Samuel v. Ho, 2009 CanLII 940 (ON SC),

  • Counsel to Ontario Hydro in an application for judicial review of a WSIAT decision denying the applicant’s right to sue a Schedule 2 employer, Dionne v. Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal, 2008 CanLII 56004 (ON SCDC),
